The story of rugby in Featherstone is not based on the birth of a single club but a stuttering tale of teams forming and disbanding. Featherstone and Purston United, Featherstone Trinity, Featherstone NUFC, Purston White Horse and Tommy Sides' Featherstone all played their part. Indeed Featherstone Rovers were originally formed in 1902 but disbanded in 1906 and reformed in 1908. It wasn't until a merger with Tommy Sides' Featherstone in 1912 that Featherstone Rovers established themselves as the premier club in the area. In the period running up to the first world war,and in the immediate post-war years, Rovers became the undisputed champions of junior rugby. It was on the back of this record that Rovers successfuly applied to join the senior ranks in 1921.
