FEATHERSTONE’S JOY.

Featherstone Rovers, the newcomers to the League, emerged with flying colours from their encounter with Bradford Northern, at Birch-lane, on Saturday. From a very early stage in the game they had the benefit of matters, and in the second-half carried all before them. There were 4,000 spectators.

There was a sensational opening. Williams dropping goal in the first minute. The same player added another goal three minutes later. The Northern defence was sorely tried, and after fifteen minutes J. Denton—a nephew of David Denton, the county cricketer-dropped another goal, which gave the Rovers a lead of six points at half-time. On resuming, Featherstone attacked with renewed zeal and tries were scored Williams, Kirkham, and Reeves.

Williams showed great ability as a goalkicker, whilst Smith at full back rendered valuable service. Featherstone proved themselves the far more capable team, and they easily deserved the victory. Bradford, although a faster team, lacked finishing power.
