OLDHAM’S DECISIVE VICTORY OVER FEATHERSTONE ROVERS

Featherstone Rovers came a nasty cropper at Oldham, when they were trounced to the tune of 53 points to 15. Run off their feet in the early stages Featherstone were placed 15 points in arrears after barely ten minutes’ play, and before the interval was taken, Oldham put on a further 11 points without response. Such was the ease at which Oldham put their points on that they gave one the impression of being capable of doubling their advantage had they been desirous.

As compared with the Oldham team Featherstone were a very ragged force indeed. They did not possess a back with the generalship of Hesketh, and the only member of the back division to live up to his reputation was Hirst.  As a whole the rear section were a slow-moving crowd indeed, although it must be admitted that they got very few chances owing to the frequency with which the forwards were beaten in the scrummages. Oldham, despite the absence of their tourists, Brough, Sloman, and Rix, shaped in workmanlike fashion, but such was the one-sided nature of the contest that it was robbed of much of its interest. Corsi, Kendal, and Hesketh each had three tries to their credit. Hesketh also placing seven goals, while the Featherstone line was also crossed by Finnerty, Bates, Hilton, and Grimes. For Featherstone Williams, Barraclough, and Hirst obtained tries, Wynard kicking three goals.
