Fail at First Appearance on Warrington Ground.
Warrington, prior to Saturday, had given anything but convincing displays, but against Featherstone Rovers the home team showed that they were not by any means a spent force. It was Featherstone’s first visit to Wilderspool and the 9.000 spectators thoroughly enjoyed the great fight which the Yorkshire “babes” put up.
It was a delightful exhibition, and both sides vied with each other in giving their best. Warrington owed their substantial victory to enterprise end resource. Featherstone certainly threw the ball about, but they did not possess that finish which their opponents did.
There was, however, one exception, and that was when Denton scored the concluding try. It was a magnificent exhibition of perfect understanding between centre and his wingman for in the manipulation of the try the ball was carried from almost the goal line to the completion of the try, the transfers numbering half a dozen times.
Jolley was a fine custodian, and appears to improve with age. Catterall got through great amount of defensive work with credit, and Blackburn made the most the chances which came his way. The winners were well served at half-back by Frawen and Ryder, and of a rare set of forwards Tranter was an excellent leader.
Goldie was a useful full-back for Featherstone and as stated, Denton and Hirst made a brilliant right wing. Williams and Morgan were overshadowed by the Warrington pair. In the pack the visiting forwards had a rare leader in Barraclough.
Warrington gave the opposition a warm time of it in the early stages, for Cunliffe and Catterall scored tries which were converted by the last-named. Denton placed a penalty goal for the visitors.
In the second half Jolley and Catterall placed penalty goals. Tranter. Johnson, and Blackburn scored tries for Warrington, one of which was converted by Caterall. Ward and Denton scored unconverted tries for the visitors.
