FEATHERSTONE ROVERS' PLUCKY STRUGGLE AGAINST HUNSLET

The visit of Hunslet to Featherstone attracted a gate of close upon 4,000, and produced a keen and interesting game.  Hunslet deserved their victory, but, nevertheless, credit must given to the Rovers for their plucky struggle. They commenced the match in stirring style, as is their wont, and the visiting defence soon had its back against the line.  In these opening movements the home backs showed intelligent combination, and before play had been in progress ten minutes, the Hunslet defence were outwitted, and a clean pass sent Seymour over with try. Immediately the visitors retaliated. Their forwards forced a way into the Rovers’ quarters, and there a penalty was given against the home side. Guerin made no mistake with his kick, though the position was none too easy. A minute or two afterwards Hunslet took the lead. Featherstone were attacking hard when the ball went into Brogden’s possession. He tricked several opponents, and made progress far as the half-way line, where he passed to Mann, who won a great race to the line. Hunslet led by two points at half-time.

The second half was contested in same spirit as the first. Play was keen and fast, and each defence was subjected severe trials. Then Band followed up a long kick by Guerin, and when a Featherstone back failed to take the ball cleanly, picked up and scored Hunslet's second try, and Guerin kicked the goal. Featherstone attacked hotly after this, and eventually wriggled over with an unconverted try. Jones placed the issue beyond doubt when he scored an easy try for the visitors.
