STOCKWELL’S TRIUMPH

After their initial triumph, at Bradford, last Saturday. Featherstone Rovers paid their first visit to Headingley last night, under Senior League auspices, but were clearly no match for Leeds, who  prevailed by the handsome margin of six goals and ten tries (43 points) to the odd try scored by Featherstone.

Featherstone will doubtless improve as the season advances, but as yet they are palpably unable to extend the leading teams in the Union. For quarter of an hour, however, they did give a taste of something like their real form, and Leeds found difficulty in this period getting beyond their own half, and were rarely allowed to open out any potential scoring schemes.

But Featherstone could not stay like Leeds, and whereas the formers’ play declined appreciably the latter gradually, but surely, assumed a dominating mastery.

Before the interval had arrived there was not the slightest comparison in the work of the two sides. The Leeds threequarters maintained such consistent co-operation, and swung the ball about with such fine accuracy, that the Featherstone defence was completely non-plussed.

Nevertheless, it was in this particular department that the team from the colliery village had revealed their ability. The game was a great personal triumph for Stockwell, who revelled in his most brilliant form, and scoring six goals and three tries garnered exactly half the Leeds total of points. Haigh was solitary scorer for Featherstone.
