OLDHAM'S NARROW VICTORY AT FEATHERSTONE

Oldham at Featherstone yesterday fulfilled their postponed League engagement, when they beat the home team by 3 points to nil in a game in which the home side were the better in every department but full back, where Knapton played a great game all the first half. The Featherstone forwards gave their backs frequent possession, with the result that J. Denton and Morgan were held a few yards from the line, and later the first named tried to get through when the pass to Hirst would have meant a certain try.  Twice before that Oldham tackled Clements near the line, and altogether the visiting defence had a worrying time, the half-time arriving with a blank score sheet.

Matters were much more even in the second half. The Oldham backs indulged in some good football, and the try which Finnerty scored was the result of clever movement which beat the Rovers' defence.  Knapton at failed goal. Featherstone were several times penalised when in very favourable positions, the many decisions of the referee were questioned. At the close some of the spectators rushed to the field, and before the Featherstone players could go to his assistance the referee was struck by a spectator. He was assisted off the field by police and officials, and there was no further scene. The man's name is known to the club officials, and they will prosecute him for assault.
