LEIGH WIN GRAND GAME AT FEATHERSTONE

Featherstone Rovers had Leigh as visitors, who gained high praise for their clever and clean play. Featherstone were without Morrell and Woolley in the forwards, and Kirkham in the third line—all injured. A trial was given centre C. Wood, a 17 year old member of the "A" team, and he made a thoroughly satisfactory debut.  Featherstone had a great surprise in the first three minutes. J. Denton had abundant chance to clear by kicking, but elected to run and pass about 20 yards from the Featherstone line. Davies snapped up his pass brilliantly, and scored an excellent try. Just on half-time Johnson secured the ball a few yards out and forced his way over. Clarkson failed with both goal kicks.

For two-thirds the second half the Rovers were on the attack, but failed at the critical moment, and some two or three chances went begging when the Leigh defence had been well beaten. The only score in this half was a good try by Morgan, who worked his way through the thick of the Leigh forwards. Leigh owe their victory mainly to their spoiling tactics, and the rock like safety of Clarkson at full back. Featherstone were on the Leigh line when the whistle blew "time".  The game was excellently contested, and the victors and the referee were heartily applauded at the close.
