HUNSLET AND FEATHERSTONE PLAY A DRAWN GAME
In their postponed League match with Featherstone Rovers, at Parkside last evening, Hunslet had to fight desperately hard to divide the points against a side which played a better and more forceful game. The Rovers forwards were the better act both in hard scrummaging and in the loose. Higson and Naylor, the ex- Huddersfield men, were genuine hard workers, for in addition to tackling well, they often broke up the Hunslet passing movements. There was little to choose between the respective half backs. Featherstone possess an active set of three-quarters, especially in the centre position, where Hirst and Seymour always had their opponents guessing. With the exception that he scored a really clever try, Guerin was not a success at centre three-quarter. At full back Mason, who has joined Hunslet from the Bradford Rugby Club, played a sound and attractive game. He was clean in his fielding, and usually kicked a good length.
In the first half play was remarkably even. Featherstone had the advantage in the scrummages and their tackling was the more deadly, but over-eagerness when near the Hunslet line often lost them chances. Brilliant passing between Hirst, Williams, and Kirkham ended in the last-named beating Walker and scoring. Smith failed with the goal shot. For obstruction the visitors were penalised, and from near the touch line Guerin kicked a splendid goal.
In the second period Featherstone took up the running but Hunslet turned the tables through fine passing between Brogden and Stanley Hale. Seeing his way barred the last-named threw to Guerin, who forced his way over, but failed with the goal kick. Williams wrested the lead back again by scoring a try and the match seemed won for Featherstone when Hunslet made a great rally. Walker burst away with a fine effort and made the scores equal by scoring try near the touch line too far out for Guerin to add the goal points.
