FEATHERSTONE JUST LOSE AT BATLEY

At Batley before 4,000 spectators. Strong forward play by Featherstone was an early feature, but Fowler, Scott, Evans, and Kilby placed the Featherstone line in danger. Williams, Kirkham and Seymour next made a good effort, and when Hirst tackled Rees near his own line matters looked bad for Batley. Up to this point Featherstone had fully held their own in every department, with the forwards frequently gaining possession.  Batley's attacks were of short duration, but after Kilby had been stopped on the line after neat passing, similar play on the part of Fowler, Rees and Williams ended in a try to the last-named. Gray kicked the goal, and hardly had the game been restarted when Kilby ran over, and Gray kicked another goal.

 On change of ends, however, Featherstone played up with great determination, and were all but over the first minute. They were driven back, but Hirst started round of passing and after Seymour and Kirkham had handled S Denton scored. J. Denton failed at goal, but the same player scored after an individual effort. Williams improved, and with only two points separating the teams, the game became exciting.
