CUP FINALISTS LOSE AT FEATHERSTONE
Last Minute Try Gives Rovers a Great Win
Featherstone Rovers, at home last night, defeated Huddersfield, the R.L. Cup finalists.
Never was victory better earned. It was the in balance until the last minute, Huddersfield were leading by 8 points to 7 up to then; In everything except scoring, Huddersfield had been second best. With the exception of Tiffany, they played their strongest side, while Featherstone had substitute for Johnson full back B.Lockwood, a lad straight from Intermediate football, still another product of the Featherstone Juniors team, several of whom are already playing with the Rovers.
Featherstone took an early lead of five points—a try by Norbury and a great penalty goal kicked from the side by Stott. Over-eagerness cost them another two tries before Huddersfield came into the picture. Then the crowd saw some delightful passing by the Huddersfield halves and third line, and nothing prettier could have been wanted than the tries scored by Mills and Markham, goal by Bowkett gave Huddersfield a three points lead at the interval.
This margin was dead against the run of the play, and In the second half Huddersfield were defending for 30 of the 40 minutes. Their line had some miraculous escapes before J. Denton, with kick from near half way, brought the Rovers within one point of the finalists. Then followed as exciting 20 minutes has been seen the Post Office Road ground. Time and time again, Featherstone got to the line, but could not get over it. Then, with one minute to go. Stott who had played a great game at centre, kicked through, regained possession and beat two men, and with Scourfleld hanging on him he scored brilliant try. It was a thrilling finish to a great game. The attendance was 1,100, and the receipts amounted to £52.
