Featherstone and York in an Exciting Draw

Had the match Featherstone v. York been a cup-tie it could not have produced a sterner struggle. York played to perfection their well-known game of forward rushes and spoiling methods, and the Featherstone backs were not allowed to develop their ordinary game. Hirst, in particular, being very well watched.  The game was one remarkable fluctuations. Kirkham, with a smart try, gave Featherstone the lead, but a smart effort by Jack Corsi, which Mirfield improved upon, put York ahead. Hirst then scored for Featherstone and Denton put his side three points ahead with his goal kick. Weak defence let Abbey slip through just on half-time for a try, which was a just reward for clever opportunism.

The second half will not readily be forgotten. With but two minutes gone, Denton once more put Featherstone in front with a penalty, but straight away from the kick-off the ball came to Higginson, who with a smart drop kick made the score ten all.  Owen, Jack Corsi (the best centre on view), and Abbey are deserving of high praise. Kirkham and Williams worked hard behind a beaten Featherstone pack, but the re-introduced Morgan, at centre, was a weak link, and James Denton disappointing at full back.
