Leeds Backs Too Good for Featherstone

Leeds turned the long lane of defeat, the humbly-placed Featherstone side conceding them a very welcome victory.  Featherstone held a lead of two points at the interval, but eventually lost by nine points. Truth to tell the first half was nearly all Featherstone’s. Their forwards not only gave their half-backs possession oftener, but they pushed the Leeds six off the ball time and time again.

Despite this great advantage, however, the Featherstone half-backs and third line never played like a winning combination. They had enough chances in the first half to have put Leeds out of court altogether, but showed a woeful lack of finish when the Leeds defence was beaten.

Wynard put them in front with penalty goal, but Broughton with a nice try gave Leeds a lead, which Thompson increased with a grand goal kick. From here up to the interval Featherstone were always on top, but could do nothing more than obtain one try, and that by the forward Higson; Wynard converting.

A Delightful Pivot

In the second half, with Binks as a delightful pivot, the Leeds third line out-played the Featherstone four, and the forwards, whilst never quite as good as the Featherstone six, gave a vastly improved display.

Broughton put Leeds in front with a brilliant try, the result of brainy work, and a mistake by Burton, who otherwise played excellently, presented Gadsby with a try, both which Thompson converted. A penalty by Wynard reduced the lead a little, but Davis close on time was allowed, by weak defence, to get over for the fourth Leeds try.  Bacon was far and away the best third line man on view, and Broughton a speedy winger, who was injured just on time, worked well with Binks.
