Veteran forward Ethelred “Bert” Woolley was signed from Dewsbury in December 1921 and went immediately into the first team.  He proved an astute signing, as forwards in those days were often interchangeable in their positions and so it was with Woolley, equally at home at prop or second-row. He even had a spell at hooker. His work was uncomplicated and unglamorous, moving from scrum to scrum, and putting in an 80 minute tackling stint on defence.   He was a mainstay of the team throughout the 1920s as Featherstone firmly established themselves in the senior league.  Such was the nature of his play that almost 200 senior matches yielded just eight tries, although he was frequently mentioned in match reports for his graft and willingness.

Born in Glass Houghton in 1889 he went down the pit as a child and was working as a colliery door minder at age 12.  His working life was as a miner at Glass Houghton Colliery which in common with very many Rovers players he combined with his playing career.  He died in 1958.
