Leeds born Cyril Plenderleith signed for Rovers as a strapping teenage three-quarter in 1933, and made his debut at centre as the 1932/33 season wound down. In October, Plenderleith was switched to the second-row for the first time and his career started to take off. He won selection for Yorkshire, no mean feat for a player at an unfashionable club like Featherstone. Within two months of his county cap he was sold to Hunslet where he played the majority of his career. He won a Championship medal in the famous 1938 All-Leeds final. He joined Dewsbury in 1949 after a row at Hunslet about his benefit season, but a broken leg finished his career.

In his early life he was a policeman, but after finishing playing, he went into the pub trade, being landlord of numerous places, most notably The Waterloo, and also The Fish House, both on East Street in Leeds. He served as a director at Hunslet and as club secretary from 1970 to 1973, when the club moved from its spiritual Parkside home.
