Francis Maloney was a talented young stand-off whose promising career had failed to take off at his first club Leeds. The move to Second Division Featherstone was a gamble for both the player and the club, but it paid off. Rovers moved Martin Pearson to full-back to incorporate Maloney, and the player responded with some quality performances. With a chunky build and plenty of pace off the mark, Maloney had vision and a good passing game too. He stepped up to First Division level effortlessly, won Great Britain Under 21s recognition, and gave a stellar display as Rovers humbled the all-conquering Champions Wigan in September 1993.

Inevitably bigger clubs were attracted to him and an offer from Warrington was too good to refuse. From there he played for a host of clubs, including Oldham, Castleford and Wakefield over a 17 year career. Francis’s father John played for many years at Hull FC, also a stand-off, and his nephew Dominic also played for Featherstone among other clubs.
