Born in Featherstone, Fred Smith came through the tried and trusted junior system to make his first team debut in 1929, one week before his brother Syd. Like so many other promising youngsters, his progress was one of stages, from Purston National School to Featherstone Green Intermediates, Cutsyke, then Featherstone Juniors. After two seasons finding his feet, Smith enjoyed a very successful 1930/1 season. He played 41 games, missing just two games all year. In the game at Bramley in January 1931, his wingman was his brother Syd, better known as a second-row forward. The match was abandoned due to the awful weather. Fred’s 14 tries made him top try scorer for the year. Given the club’s precarious financial situation, the inevitable happened and in July 1931 he was then sold to York for £500.
