Garry Ward came through the junior ranks of the U17s and U19s and signed for the club at the same time as Tony O’Toole in 1980. As a Featherstone High School pupil he represented Yorkshire Under 16's and gained selection for the England squad.  He made his first team debut off the bench in the last game of 1981/2, a good win at Wakefield. His call-up was reward for some good performances with the A team, and he shared the bench with another debutant Alan Banks. The following two seasons yielded just a further four appearances.
