Forward George Major made his debut for Featherstone Rovers during World War Two. As a youngster he lived on Moor Road, next door to Keith Goulding and a few houses down from Ray Lyman. After his first team debut at loose forward, George settled down to become a first team regular at second-row, apart from one match at Halifax in January 1943 when he was asked to fill in at full-back, so short of backs was the team. George’s twin brother Jack also signed for Rovers, but never played for the first team, and then signed for Barrow. Towards the end of the war, George also played a few games for Barrow. Four years later George came back to Featherstone and played for a couple more seasons, now as a prop forward. Decades later, George’s nephew Mick Major also played professionally at Huddersfield.
