George Whittaker signed from Kinsley in September 1927, made his senior debut shortly afterwards against Leeds, and was then a permanent fixture as a stylish player at centre, wing or stand-off. He was an integral part of the Rovers teams that challenged for honours in the late 1920's, finishing runners-up in the 1928 Championship Final against Swinton and the 1928 Yorkshire Cup Final against Leeds. In August 1930 he was reluctantly transferred to Swinton to raise cash for the club's survival, having scored 26 tries in 88 appearances.

He went on to star in the successful Swinton side of the era and also represented Yorkshire.  Inevitably when he made his first appearance for Swinton against Rovers at Post Office Road in February 1931, in a Challenge Cup first round tie, he made the break for the only try scored in the game. Swinton, as league leaders scraped home 7-2 to avoid what would have been an almighty cup upset.
