Following injuries to full back Sid Denton and his back up Bill Seymour, Herbert Hoult a promising youngster from Normanton was given a trial in a game away at Dewsbury on 15 September 1923.  Also making his debut in that game was winger Albert Cartwright.  Hoult's career with Rovers did not progress any further whereas Cartwright became a regular player for the rest of the 1920s.
