In his prime, Hitro Okesene was a fearsome sight. A big raw-boned kiwi who loved the front-row battle, he quickly became a cult hero at Featherstone during the 1999 season. As a youngster, Hitro came over to England to play for Cameron Bell’s Carlisle team as he established his reputation. He then played NRL for three years when the (then) Auckland Warriors joined the league. After that, he settled in England, with a year at Hull before joining Rovers. His signing, and the return of Brendon Tuuta, helped soften the blow of missing out on Super League at the end of 1998. Those two, alongside Carl Hall and Asa Amone created quite a colony of New Zealanders at Featherstone that year. Okesene played out the rest of his career at Workington.
