Local winger Ian Thompson actually signed for Wigan as a junior, but came to Featherstone for first team football when that move didn’t work out. Used occasionally in his first two seasons, it was not until the 2000 season that he got an extended run under coach Peter Roe. Matt Bramald was switched to centre and Thompson played most of that season outside him. Although he scored a modest seven tries that season, he provided a useful foil to the prolific Jamie Stokes on the opposite wing. Thompson signed for Sheffield for 2001 and played three seasons there before retiring.
