JW “Jack” Smith was born in Castleford and played for both Bramley and Batley before joining Featherstone in 1926. A former Yorkshire county player he was exchanged for two Featherstone reserve forwards Lou Kingsbury and George Withrington.  This proved a shrewd bit of business as Jack became a feature of Rovers’ pack for four seasons. In his first year, he showed a real penchant for try-scoring, unusual in a forward in those days. Alternating between prop and second-row he was fundamental in the rise of Featherstone to the dizzy heights of third in the table in 1927/8 and the Championship final versus Swinton. Smith played prop in that game, which, although Rovers lost, really put the club on the map as a force in the game.

Smith played in the 1928 Yorkshire Cup final too, but with Joe Hall injured and Charlie Flaherty suspended, he filled in at hooker. Rovers lost that game, but Smith played at nine in quite a few more games that season. When he retired in 1930, he had clocked up almost 100 games for Featherstone and served the club well.
