A local product, James Ford came through the same academy team as Richard Whiting, Andy Bailey and others from 2002 to win a first team place, equally at home at centre or on the wing. Not the biggest player, but quick and intelligent, Ford developed into a useful squad man but left when Rovers were relegated in 2005. He spent the rest of his playing career at Championship level, serving Sheffield, briefly at Castleford and Widnes, before playing perhaps his best rugby at York. After retiring he took up coaching at York with notable success.
