Although originally from Sharlston, James Lockwood signed for Dewsbury as a tall rangy back-row forward. After three successful seasons there he signed for Featherstone, and his industry and work-rate quickly established him as a first team regular. Under Daryl Powell, he was part of Rovers Grand final team at the end of his first season. However, it was the 2013 season that established him as one of the Championship’s top forwards. An ever-present who played long spells as a forward, he grabbed 13 tries that year and was named in the Championship Dream Team. The following season he helped Rovers back to the 2014 Grand final against Leigh. His career then took a huge knock when he received a lengthy ban for using illegal substances. He took his punishment, kept fit and was able to regain his place in the Rovers squad on his return, again offering the same level of consistency and hard work. He moved up to the front-row, consistently leading from the front. It was logical therefore that he was made club captain at the start of the 2019 season under Ryan Carr. It was a position held with justifiable pride for the next five years. As was to be expected, Lockwood continued to offer the same high work-rate as Rovers came from 4^th position to make the Grand final again, losing to Toronto in Canada.

In 2021 with a significant number of ex-Super League forwards alongside him, Lockwood led his side to a second successive Grand final, the fourth of his Featherstone career, another defeat, this time to Toulouse. His efforts to play in the 1895 Cup final at Wembley went above and beyond the call of duty. With his heavily pregnant wife about to give birth, Lockwood raced home from Rovers’ London base, only to find it was a false alarm, and head back to London in the small hours to lead his team to victory at midday. His baby daughter was born two days later. The 2022 season was Lockwood's fourth as Featherstone captain, and he once again led from the front, taking the side to an 1895 Cup final at Tottenham but eventually stumbling in the playoffs after a strong league campaign. He had planned to make that season his last, but delayed that to have another go at promotion in 2023. Whilst sweeping the board in the league programme, he skippered the side in 24 of the 29 fixtures, but once again Rovers fell down in the playoffs. He then officially retired as part of wholesale changes made to the first team squad. However, the following July, with the side struggling to adapt to wholesale changes made to the squad, Lockwood answered an emergency call to come out of retirement and once again lead from the front. He had obviously kept himself fit, as he slotted back into his customary front row position, offering experience and guidance, as well as muscle and hard work, to the Rovers pack. He re-retired at the end of 2024.
