When Featherstone sold star hooker Vic Darlison to Wigan in the season before World War Two, they received veteran Joe Golby in exchange. Believing that Golby’s contribution would be minimal, Rovers also signed Jim Bowden from York as Darlison’s replacement, but Golby’s form was such that Bowden couldn’t get in the team. He was loaned out to a number of clubs during the war, including back to York. Eventually time caught up with Golby and Bowden finally got his chance at Featherstone. He served the club well, playing 84 games in 5 war-time seasons as well as kicking a creditable 47 goals, one of a small number of goal-kicking hookers we have had over the years.
