Jimmy Carlton came through the ranks in local amateur leagues and signed as a youngster for Huddersfield Giants, spending three seasons there before joining Gateshead. He was still a young player when he came to Featherstone in 2001 under Peter Roe as a strong-running second-rower. He had a year out and then came back to Featherstone for two more seasons, used largely as an impact player off the bench. From there he went back to the amateur game and played with Featherstone Lions.
