Speedy winger Joe started his career with the Keighley colts side and progressed to the first team.  In 1981, he signed for the fledgling Carlisle club who paid £9,250 for his services.  Joe Bardgett shot to fame with an amazing length-of-the-field try for Carlisle at Widnes which won the BBC Try of the Season competition in the 81/82 season. Allan Agar brought him to Featherstone in 1983, to replace the newly retired Ken Kellett, for a £10,000 transfer fee.  His Rovers career wasn't a great success as he managed just three tries in an extended run of 28 appearances.  In a struggling team his form dipped and towards the end of the season he was sent on loan to Oldham.   The following season he returned to Keighley for a £5,000 transfer fee.
