Featherstone born prop Johnny Spells was one of a number of useful forwards to have the misfortune to compete for a first team place with some of the best in the game, Jimmy Thompson and Vince Farrar. Understandably, his first team career was duly limited, but his commitment to the Rovers cause was never doubted. In the earlier part of his career he played mostly second-row, and then made the inevitable transition to prop. Later in his career he played for Jubilee ARLFC in their famous BARLA National Cup win in 1985 over West Hull.
