Versatile halfback Matty Wildie spent five years at Wakefield Trinity on the fringes of their first team squad, interspersed with loan spells. He made the break from Trinity by joining Dewsbury in 2015 where he caught the eye of Featherstone Rovers, who promptly signed him up for 2016. However, a cruel injury in a pre-season friendly cost him the whole season on the sidelines. He finally made his debut at the start of 2017, proving himself to be an astute, hard-working player, equally at home at scrum-half, stand-off or hooker. Throughout his first year he struck up a good partnership with Anthony Thackeray, an ever-present in the first team seventeen. The following year he offered more of the same, a spell as rotating hooker with Keal Carlile and then at scrum-half partnering Thackeray again, missing just three games all year. At the end of that year he moved to Bradford, before joining Leigh.

Wildie came back to Featherstone for a second spell in 2022 to work in tandem with Connor Jones in the acting half-back role. With hardworking defence and solid distribution, WIldie had a strong season and became an integral part of the team’s operations. He also occasionally slotted into his old half-back role. Under Sean Long in 2023, Wildie and Jones reprised their roles, with the former offering close distribution work with his forwards, allied to tremendous work-rate on defence. He missed just two matches all season and passed the 100 appearances milestone in the process. When Rovers failed to reach the Grand final for the second successive season, Wildie was part of a large clearout of the playing squad, and he joined Oldham for 2024, linking up again with coach Sean Long.
