Quite late in his career Neil Roebuck emerged as a quality hooker who served Featherstone well in over 100 first team games. After playing at Wembley as a schoolboy in 1981, Roebuck had begun his professional career in the back row at Bradford, then Castleford, where he was regarded as a utility forward. Perhaps his career had suffered as a result, but at 24 years old he came to Rovers in 1993. After two years at loose forward at Featherstone without holding down a regular place, he found a new lease of life in the middle of the front row and was our first choice throughout the centenary and first summer seasons in a combination with Steve Molloy and Simon Tuffs. Credit for this transformation had to go to coach David Ward who had been a very fine hooker himself at Leeds in the seventies. His career was cut short by a serious knee injury which forced him into early retirement.
