Featherstone born Norman Shaw made his debut as a 19 year old stand-off in September 1928 after signing from Rovers Supporters’ side. He had a turn of pace and had won a number of amateur and semi-professional sprints in the area, but he got little opportunity to demonstrate this in a defence dominated game which finished 0-0 (one of the few Rovers have ever been involved in). However, he was primarily a scrum half and found opportunities in the first team limited by the presence of Charlie Annable. He did get more first team games during the 1930/31 season and was part of the team that nearly pulled off a shock victory against Wigan in September 1930. Shaw had created a try for Jim Denton by making a break and chipping over the Wigan defence, and Rovers were leading 9-7 with only minutes left. Rovers were awarded a scrum under their own sticks, when the referee who had previously warned Norman for feeding, said he’d be sent off if he did it again, a threat he repeated at the scrum. Norman always maintained that the referee was wrong but dare not risk giving away 2 points so to his eternal regret he fed the ball to the Wigan side and they scored and converted.

In 1931, he was made redundant from the pit and had to stop playing for Rovers and focus on trying to find work. That was the end of his Rovers career after 15 appearances but he did go on to play nominally “amateur” rugby with Bagley’s Glass works, where he got “boot money”, and later recalled they were paying more as a so-called amateur side than Featherstone were paying at the time.
