Signed from Girnhill Lane Intermediates in December 1940, Percy Searles went straight into Rovers’ first team, the typical nuggety scrum-half for which the club was rightly famous. When he signed for the club he was described as “the finest scrum-half in the Wakefield and District Intermediate League”. Deputising for Ray Hamer, Searles managed four games that first year. For the rest of the war he played occasionally for Rovers, as a war-time guest for a number of other clubs including Leeds and Castleford as well as an extended loan spell at Batley. Once the war was over he signed permanently for Batley.
