Ray signed for Featherstone Rovers from Bentley in Doncaster at the start of the 1972/73 season. Naturally, he was a stand-off, but with Mick Smith, then John Newlove and Mel Mason for competition, Wilson also filled in across the three-quarters. After three seasons he transferred to Doncaster.

Later in life, following an accident, Ray was confined to a wheelchair but still supported Featherstone Rovers whenever he could, and advised the club on facilities for wheelchairs during a ground redevelopment.
