Ricky Helliwell came through the Academy system at Salford where his early progress was hampered by a serious ankle injury. It was at Featherstone Rovers under coach Peter Roe that he received his first real opportunity to shine, which, niggling injuries notwithstanding, he took. Often used off the bench, he was a useful squad man, but with the likes of Neil Lowe and Steve Dooler to dislodge, his first team place was never guaranteed. He later played for Keighley and then Hunslet.
