A notable member of the Dooler clan of Sharlston, Steve Dooler came onto the scene as a pacy second-row teenager, fast enough indeed to cover at centre when required. His appetite for tackling however saw him quickly nail down a regular pack place, part of a generation of forwards including Stuart Dickens and Neil Lowe who all came through together. At the end of his first season, he was on the bench for Rovers 1998 Grand final against Wakefield, although he was unused.

He was used sparingly in the following season, often appearing on the bench where his ability to cover the back-row or the three-quarters could be utilised. From 2000 he was a more or less constant figure in the back-row alongside Lowe and Danny Evans. A willing runner and keen tackler, Dooler could also be relied upon to contribute his share of tries over a season. His best season in that respect was 2004 when he scored 10 tries. After Rovers’ relegation in 2005, he stuck with the club and began to assume a senior status role within a team that went through a great transition in National League Two. Dooler was there to help the club back into the Championship in 2007.

After ten years solid service he was granted a well-deserved benefit in 2006, eventually playing on until the 2008 season when he moved to Hunslet where he finished his career.
