Stephen “Yank” Hankins was born at Featherstone, but soccer was his first love and he had schoolboy trials at Leeds United. He was a rugby league natural though and started his professional career at Dewsbury. He established a reputation as a hard-working, tough tackling second-rower. Needing some steel in the Rovers pack, Paul Daley brought him to Featherstone in our Second Division Championship winning season of 1980. Once back in the top flight, Steve looked the part, a reliable performer in the front-row or second-row as required. Once Allan Agar took over as coach, Hankins’ game stepped up a notch, having known each other from their Dewsbury days. His finest hour was of course, yet another effective ‘no frills’ performance in the Challenge Cup final at Wembley in 1983. His performance that day was the epitome of his career combining, as it did, hard graft with subtle ball-handling skills, as witnessed in his slipped pass for David Hobbs match-levelling try. After two more years sterling service, he moved to Bramley to play out the rest of his commendable career.
