Local winger Steve Reed burst onto the scene for Rovers’ newly promoted side in August 1980. The son of club treasurer Jim Reed, he was a fixture on the opposite wing to Ken Kellett in his debut season, scoring five tries in 22 games. The following years brought him a remarkably similar four tries in 22 matches, but when Allan Agar replaced Vince Farrar the following year, he preferred John Marsden, and Reed moved to Batley where he spent a number of seasons.
