Sharlston born and bred, Steve Sayer suffered the misfortune to be a prop forward during an era when Featherstone Rovers had a tremendously talented pack. Just one look at the typical line up of the A team forwards during his time with the club shows the strength in depth of the forward positions. Alongside Sayer in the reserves would be players of the calibre of Phil Sharp, Dave Busfield, Barry Limb, etc. Nevertheless, Sayer managed 16 games in four seasons and served the club well.
