Reserve team forward Syd Smith had a most unusual first team career at Featherstone. His natural position was second-row, and occasionally he played prop. As such, he was a useful member of the squad. Called on by the first team for the first time in March 1929, he found himself, due to withdrawals and late injuries, at full-back. An on-field injury early in the first half saw him play most of the game on the wing, a disorientating debut for a second-rower. The following year, he played four matches late in the season, in a more orthodox forward position, with his brother Fred Smith in the three-quarters. In his third year, he found himself called on to play a game on the wing on an ice rink of a pitch at Bramley outside Fred for the first time. The conditions were so bad the match was abandoned. Syd Smith’s career consisted of just 12 matches, but he was selected in six different positions.
