Signed from Keighley just a few weeks after Rovers had thrashed his club 86-18 in the Yorkshire Cup, Terry Manning was the first of three incredibly good value buys Featherstone made from the Lawkholme Lane side in just over a year. Terry had played his junior rugby at Elland, signed for Keighley in 1987 and played 61 games with 29 tries scored in the bustling style that soon became his Rovers’ trademark.

Well built, tough and enthusiastic, Manning had a great attitude to the game, showed skilful touches and had a nice turn of speed. It was no surprise he quickly became a crowd favourite at Post Office Road. Over six seasons he rarely missed a match with the club, adding durability and consistency to his list of attributes. When Rovers added wingers Ikram Butt and Keighley’s Owen Simpson to a three-quarter line that already contained Manning and Paul Newlove, then one of Rovers’ all-time greatest three-quarter lines was in place. In our Second Division Championship season of 1992/93 Terry played every single minute of every single match and topped it off with a Premiership winner’s medal at Old Trafford.

In the summer of 1994 facing competition from Andy Currier, Iva Ropati and Matt Calland, Rovers took the decision to let Manning go. He joined Doncaster, then a First Division club, and later played for Hull FC.
