Tommy Saxton’s professional career spanned 17 seasons at numerous clubs, but he is fondly remembered at Featherstone as one of the star players from a tremendously successful period in the club’s history. He started as a full-back at Castleford and throughout his career he found himself equally at home at number 1 or on the wing. After three years at the Tigers he moved to Hull where he won a Challenge Cup winners’ medal, full-back in Hull’s triumph over Leeds in Cardiff in 2005. A short stay at Wakefield, back to Castleford and a loan spell at Salford brought him to Featherstone in 2008.

He immediately looked at home. An elusive runner, difficult to tackle, with an eye for a gap and decent pace, he quickly became an indispensable part of the Rovers set up. Used mainly at full-back and centre in his first year, wing became his preferred position and his statistics over six full seasons showed remarkable consistency and dedication to the cause. In terms of try scoring, 2011 was his best year, 23 tries in 26 games that year, including an iconic moment. The sight of Saxton racing clear for an 80 metre try in the Grand final romp against Sheffield was a glorious moment for all Rovers fans and rich reward for the player.

After another good season in 2013 with 14 tries in 30 games he suddenly found himself on the outer with new coach John Bastian. His departure to Halifax was one of a number of recruitment errors committed at that time. He gave two years good service to Halifax and three more to York before finally retiring after more than 350 career games and 125 tries.
