There was a period of time from 1997 to 2002 when an Australian full-back was ‘de rigeur’ for Featherstone Rovers. The 1999 version was Wayne Simonds, then a 33 year old veteran but a very handy full-back nonetheless in a disappointing season.  After a ARL career at Western Suburbs and Adelaide Rams among others covering over 130 top flight matches, Simonds replaced Steve Collins at Rovers. Initially he played on the wing with Matt Bramald at full-back, but a mid-season switch worked well for both players. With 19 tries, Simonds pipped Jamie Stokes to be the season’s top try scorer, and at the end of the year he retired. The following year Michael Rhodes took over and the Australian tradition continued.
