Born at St.Helens, Abe Terry played six seasons for his hometown team as a front-row forward, winning Lancashire and Great Britain caps. He was a Great Britain tourist in 1958 and won the Challenge Cup at Wembley in 1961. In those days he was noted for his remarkable speed off the mark for a prop. In 1962 he moved to Leeds, but after only a short spell there he joined Featherstone for £3,000. After making his debut in December 1962 he had to wait over three months for his second match as the ‘big freeze’ of 1962/63 cancelled all rugby league for 12 weeks. He went on to form a formidable front-row alongside Willis Fawley and Malcolm Dixon. He played for Rovers in their famous 1963 win over Australia and in that season’s Yorkshire Cup final. Early the following season he transferred to Castleford.
