Alan Marchant was one of a long line of classy scrum-halves to emerge from Featherstone.  He was respected as a tremendous tackler and a very intelligent tactician with smart kicking skills.

Alan hailed from Cutsyke, and became a miner who graduated from the Featherstone Juniors to sign professional forms for Rovers in May 1955.  He made his senior debut against Doncaster on 24^th March 1956. But, with Don Fox well established at scrum-half, Marchant was to suffer the same frustration which had led to other talented number sevens leaving Post Office Road in search of first team football – Ray Evans to Rochdale in 1954 and Tommy Smales to Huddersfield a year later.

Alan did, however, make his mark in Featherstone’s Challenge Cup campaigns of 1958 and 1959 when Fox was unavailable.  Marchant played in both semi-finals as well as against Alex Murphy in the famous victory in the snow over St Helens in 1958.  But when Don Fox came back at the start of the 1959/60 season, the Rovers’ scrum-half dilemma re-emerged and, eventually, Rovers had to accede to his transfer request and he moved to Halifax in November 1959 in exchange for loose forward Colin Clift.  Alan had played 47 first team games for Featherstone spread over five seasons.

He went on to have a successful career at both Halifax and Hunslet.  This included winning the Championship in 1964/65, the Yorkshire Cup (against Featherstone in 1963) and a losing Wembley appearance in 1965.

Confusingly, Featherstone Rovers had two players called Alan Marchant playing for the club in 1955/56 and 1956/57. The other Alan was a winger.
