Winger Albert Place was signed from Hunslet in time to make his debut on the opening day of the last War Emergency League season, 1944/45, having previously played for Leeds. He was virtually an ever-present on one wing all year long, with either Jack Lane or Albany Longley on the other. Although he managed a meagre four tries all season, this astonishingly left him as the club’s joint leading try scorer for the whole season along with second-rower Ernie Wright. Place played less in the immediate post-war years but still managed just over 50 career appearances.
