Half-back Alf Taylor made his debut for Featherstone Rovers on Christmas Day 1945 against York in the first season after World War Two. Originally picked at stand-off, he was switched to scrum-half as Rovers suffered injuries. However, the press report of the match stated “Taylor was quite at home in his original position, and also played well after the rearrangement, but his inexperience of the position told”.  Retained at stand-off for the following week against Huddersfield, Rovers were thrashed out of sight and Taylor paid the price.
