Alf Watson was born in Portobello, Wakefield and made his debut for Trinity in 1936, and played loose forward in the 1936 Yorkshire Cup Final.  He moved to Leeds in 1938 and gained international honours.  His speed and strength made him a power in the loose.  In World War Two he joined the Army but was captured early on and spent nearly six years as a prisoner of war in Germany.  He made a remarkable recovery from his imprisonment to play for Leeds in the 1947 Challenge Cup Final but unfortunately there was to be no fairy tale ending as Leeds lost to Bradford Northern. After this game he retired but was persuaded back by Featherstone Rovers and moved on a free transfer in March 1949.  He played three games but suffered a back injury and though keen to play on he retired after medical advice.
