Although he was locally born Allan Agar played just a few games for his home-town team before enjoying great success elsewhere. Agar signed for Featherstone as a very promising teenager, joining the club his brother Fred already played for. Faced with competition for the number seven shirt from incumbent Carl Dooler, as well as the up-and-coming Steve Nash, Agar’s Rovers career was limited to two starts and two bench appearances. He left Featherstone in 1968 for Dewsbury, where he won the Championship in 1973. After a spell at Hunslet he moved to Hull KR where he won the Challenge Cup in 1980. It was while still playing that he started his coaching career at Carlisle in their first ever season and with help from the likes of Jimmy Thompson and Mick Morgan had steered the new club to promotion at the first attempt.

He was later involved in marketing, and for a brief spell was appointed the CEO of Featherstone Rovers in 2001. His son Richard followed him as a Featherstone player and a successful coach at numerous clubs.
